Island of Monsters is an imaginary place but the performers that dress up as spirits and ghost inhabitants are very real. The photographer, Charles Fréger, says that the Japanese use the word ‘monsters’ to refer to fantastic objects, ghosts, or demons.
Fréger took the photos in Japan and compiled the series into a book – Yokainoshima: Island of Monsters. The book also features folkloric essays of the Island spirits.
